Nurturing a Simple Life: Homesteading, Homemaking, and Heartfelt Moments

Learning to Love My Home (Even Without the Perfect Decor)

Sharing is caring!

You know those people who can walk into Hobby Lobby, grab a few things that don’t even seem to match, and somehow walk out ready to make a Pinterest board come to life? Yeah… I’m not one of them.

I want to be. Oh, how I want to be. I want the cozy, picture-perfect, twinkle-lighted, hot-cocoa-by-the-fire vibe that feels straight out of a Hallmark movie. But every time I go to decorate, I just stand there… staring at my blank walls, wondering where to even start.

I can scroll Pinterest for hours, save a hundred ideas, and then somehow end up with nothing that looks remotely like what I pictured. It’s like my brain says, “You can do this!” but my hands are like, “Nope. Not today.”

I Love All the Styles… Which Means I Have None

Part of my problem is that I like everything. I’ll fall in love with a vintage dresser one day, a sleek modern lamp the next, and a farmhouse table right after that. Then I try to put them all together, and it looks like my house has an identity crisis.

Minimalist me says, “Let’s keep it simple and clean.”

Cozy me says, “We need blankets. Everywhere.”

Farmhouse me says, “Add shiplap.”

And vintage me says, “Grab the old ladder and some antique books.”

By the end, I’ve got five competing aesthetics and no idea how to make them friends.

Thank goodness for my mom’s crafty streak after she came home from nursing or my walls would be empty! Thanks mom!

Please Tell Me I’m Not the Only One

Sometimes I wonder if there are other people like me. People who crave that warm, “homey” feel but just can’t seem to make it happen. People who buy all the cute decor, then stare at it, completely unsure what to do next.

Because honestly, I’m convinced there are two types of people in the world:

Those who just know how to make a space look beautiful. And those of us who keep trying, bless our hearts.

If you’re sitting there surrounded by boxes of decorations, a few half-burnt candles, and a Pinterest board full of dreams, just know, I see you. You’re not alone.

Maybe our homes won’t ever look like they came straight out of a magazine. Maybe our porch pumpkins or Christmas lights won’t match perfectly. But they’ll still feel like us — a little bit cozy, a little bit chaotic, and full of good intentions.

And honestly, that’s probably what makes them perfect anyway.

Happy (Not) Decorating!
